Niro sets cross-country record (76.6 mpg!), Soul makes THE 10 Best list

Arriving at New York City Hall this month in downtown Manhattan, the 2017 Kia Niro officially received a Guinness World Record title for the lowest fuel consumption driving across the USA from coast to coast (hybrid car). The new record-setting mark is an incredible 76.6 mpg.

Driven by co-drivers Wayne Gerdes of Carlsbad, CA and Robert Winger of Williamsburg, VA the Niro EX recorded 3,715.4 miles from Los Angeles City Hall to New York City Hall using only 48.5 gallons, or 4.1 tanks, of gas. The vehicle was not altered in any way for the attempt.

“We’re extremely pleased with the Niro’s record-breaking performance,” said Orth Hedrick, Kia vice president, product planning. “We set out to build a vehicle that offers real-world utility, great looks and fantastic mileage, and setting the Guinness World Record title confirms our achievement.”

The Niro, an Urban Crossover Hybrid Vehicle, is the first dedicated Kia hybrid and was conceived to bridge the gap between outstanding fuel economy and compact crossover usefulness. In addition to its athletic and attractive design, the Niro’s long list of features includes: a specially-designed, innovative hybrid system to provide a more dynamic and engaging driving experience; a spacious cabin with lots of room for five occupants and their gear; a full array of advanced driver assistance features—available Autonomous Emergency Braking, Blind Spot Detection, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Change Assist and Lane Departure Warning; and advanced telematics and entertainment equipment — UVO3 with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and a 7-inch touch screen and available Smart Cruise Control, navigation and a Harman Kardon premium audio system.

The all-new 2017 Niro is set to arrive in Kia retailers in the first quarter of next year and will be available in five trim levels: FE, LX, EX, Touring and in a limited-quantity Launch Edition. The FE is EPA rated to achieve 52 mpg highway/49 mpg city/50 mpg combined, while the LX reaches 51/46/49 mpg and the Touring at 46/40/43 mpg.

Meanwhile, when the Car and Driver 10Best Trucks and SUVs list for 2017 was announced, there was Kia Soul. Thanks to its colorful personality, the Soul stood out among competitors in its segment, while its extensive list of features and excellent value further helped it land a spot on the esteemed list.

“The Soul has been an extraordinary success story for the Kia brand,” said Hedrick, “and earning this award is a testament to our continued commitment to world-class quality and top-notch design that can be, in the Soul’s case, as funky as it is functional.”

An expansion of the highly respected 10Best franchise—which has listed Car and Driver’s 10 best cars on the market each January issue for the past 35 years—the 10Best Trucks and SUVs awards are organized around segments and recognize one honoree from each category, including subcompact SUV, subcompact luxury SUV, compact SUV, compact luxury SUV, mid-size SUV, mid-size luxury SUV, large SUV, mid-size pickup, full-size pickup, and van.

Nominees consist of all-new or significantly updated vehicles. For the inaugural 10Best Trucks and SUVs awards, every nameplate—more than 150—was eligible. All vehicles must fall under the base-price cap of $80,000 and be on sale in January 2017.

For 2017, the Soul gains a 201hp 1.6L turbocharged engine for more fun than ever. Though the 1.6L turbo engine adds 40hp, fuel economy is 28 mpg, city and highway combined, slightly better than the combined mileage of the 2.0L normally-aspirated 161-hp engine in the Soul Plus and in the Soul Base 1.6L, which produces 130hp. Performance in the turbocharged Exclaim is further enhanced by the addition of a new 7 speed Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT), contributing to a more engaging driving experience. Other new options for the 2017 are convenience systems such as Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Blind Spot Detection. The 2017 Exclaim also gets standard UVO3 with e-Services with integrated Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
