Kia cranks up the power with Soul Turbo

Kia Soul has always had, well…soul. Now it’s got more guts, too. Introducing the new Soul Turbo.

People are impressed.

AutoWeek says, “A sporty option at last…the new Turbo breaks through the 200hp barrier.”

They continued “Soul Turbo is a range-topping premium trim level that offers more oomph, along with nicer trimmings and just about all the option boxes checked. A gain of 40hp is a lot when it comes to 4-cylinder in mass-market crossovers, and the fact that fuel economy is better in this version is an extra benefit.”

Car and Driver says the Turbo is “Soul with a bit more pep in its step…fun to drive and an appealing overall package with lots of practicality baked in.”

Autorader wrote, “Kia didn't just add a new engine choice for the Soul -- they also spruced up the interior and exterior. On the inside, the Soul Turbo gets a D-shaped leather-wrapped steering wheel, push-button start with Smart Key, a 4.3” display in the instrument cluster, two USB charging ports in the center console, automatic air conditioning, leather-trimmed seating, a leatherette-covered meter hood, door center trim inserts and door armrests. On the outside, the Turbo gets black-gloss front and rear bumper "tusks", 18” alloy wheels and larger front disc brakes. Optional HID headlights and LED fog lights are also new features, and two new colors (Mysterious Blue and Russet Brown) have been added to the palette.”

MotorTrend says, “Kia invited a group of journalists to sample the turbocharged version of the quirky Soul in Northern California. Our route took us from San Francisco across the Golden Gate Bridge and into the scenic Pacific Coast Highway toward Calistoga in Napa County, where we got to try out the most powerful Soul on winding roads and the open highway. Key styling cues that distinguish the Soul Turbo from more pedestrian variants include a red Soul badge, red accent lines on the side and up front, and bright dual exhaust tips. Otherwise the car’s design has remained largely the same, and it’s still recognizable as the hip and cool boxcar that it is.

“On the winding roads of Northern California, the Soul Turbo’s extra power made a noticeable improvement to the Soul’s driving experience. The addition torque on tap means you can press lightly on the accelerator pedal and use all of that twist to your advantage. There’s also a drive-mode selector like in other Soul models. In the turbocharged variant, there’s only Normal and Sport modes. The Sport mode tightens up the steering a little, improves throttle response, and causes the transmission to hold gears longer, which enables you to stay in the engine’s powerband more often.”

And there’s this: Soul Turbo also is the most fuel-efficient member of the Soul lineup with 26/31 mpg city/highway (EPA estimated).
