2017 Kia Optima: Looking good all the way around

2017 Kia Optima: Looking good all the way around

In the mid-size category, more and more drivers are turning to Kia Optima. Here are some of the reasons why.

For starters, the 2017 Kia Optima has a below-average starting price of just $22,200, yet it comes with many of the same standard features offered by more expensive competitors. Its interior is upscale with spacious seats, and the cargo area is large.

Its interior is where it really shines, with high-quality materials throughout and an easy-to-use infotainment system. It is also spacious; you'll have no problem fitting family and friends in the front and rear seats.

Optima has plenty of technology to keep you and your passengers entertained and lots of safety features to keep you protected as well. The Optima has many packages available, so you can add certain features without upgrading an entire trim. This allows you to get what you want while spending less.

Comparison to, say, Honda Accord? Accord starts at $22,455, slightly higher than the Optima's starting price, but while it comes with similar standard features, it doesn't have a touch screen. Instead, the Accord has an 8-inch color display. With Optima, you'll pay less to get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, since you'd have to pay $25,830 for the Accord EX model. In the Optima, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay can be added to the base trim. Definitely more features for your money in the Optima.

Kia Optima seats five on cloth upholstery. An eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat with two-way lumbar support is also standard. Available features include leather upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, a 12-way power-adjustable driver's seat with four-way lumbar support, sport leather upholstery, and Nappa leather upholstery.

There is ample leg- and headroom in both the front and rear seats. Drivers and passengers will be plenty comfortable even on longer journeys, especially with upper-trim amenities and the range of power adjustments.

Kia Optima has plenty of room for two child seats in the rear, with two sets of lower LATCH anchors that are easy to access and use. The three top tethers are on a rear shelf behind the head restraints. They are also clearly marked and easy to use.

Optima's cabin is full of first-rate materials, most of which are soft to the touch. Its style and design present the car as one more expensive than you'd expect at this price point in this class.

Optima has 15.9 cubic feet of trunk space, which is large for the class.

Infotainment, Bluetooth, and Navigation: Optima comes standard with a 5-inch touch screen, a USB port, satellite radio, a six-speaker sound system, Bluetooth, a rearview camera, and remote keyless entry. Available features include Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, an upgraded UVO infotainment system with a 7-or 8-inch touch screen, an auto-open trunk, push-button start, navigation, a panoramic sunroof, and a 10-speaker Harman Kardon surround sound audio system.

The Optima's UVO infotainment system is easy to use thanks to its logical layout and intuitive menus. The touch screen is bright and responsive. Its positioning on the dash makes it accessible to the driver and passenger, and the knobs and buttons make it even easier to use if you prefer traditional controls.

Optima has a predicted reliability rating of four out of five from J.D. Power and Associates, which means it's expected to be more reliable than most vehicles on the road. This is among the best ratings in the class.

Kia covers the 2017 Optima with a five-year/60,000-mile limited warranty and a 10-year/100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty.

Optima earns five out of five stars across the board in all National Highway Traffic Safety Administration tests, including frontal and side crash tests, rollover tests, and overall safety tests. The Optima earns the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's top score of Good in all crashworthiness categories and a top score of Superior in front crash prevention. It is also awarded the IIHS 2017 Top Safety Pick title.
